Around the Upstate
City to Celebrate National Bike Month
GREENVILLE, SC - April 29, 2010 - The City of Greenville will celebrate National Bike Month with free family-friendly activities designed to appeal to bicycle enthusiasts of all ages, skill levels and interests. Volunteers from Bikeville, the City’s bicycle-friendly community initiative, have developed a series of events which will take place throughout the month of May to promote greater public awareness of bicycle operation, safety and enjoyment.
The League of American Bicyclists honored Greenville with its prestigious Bicycle Friendly Community award (Bronze Level) in October 2009 and the City began a comprehensive Bicycle Master Plan study in January of this year. The goal is to provide infrastructure, education and outreach to increase the number of trips made by bicycles. This will be achieved by improving roads to accommodate bicyclists and creating programs that encourage alternative transportation. Over the past five years, the City has installed eight miles of bicycle lanes and there are currently 10 miles of paved bicycle trails throughout the city. The City plans to install an additional five miles of bicycle lanes within the next year.
